Waist-to-hip ratio

Enter your waist and hip measurements in the same unit.

Waist-to-hip ratio is a simple measure of how fat is distributed on your body. Fat carried around the middle carries more health risk than fat on the hips. Measure your waist at its narrowest point and your hips at their widest — the units don't matter as long as both use the same one.

Frequently asked questions

Why measure waist-to-hip ratio instead of just BMI?

BMI can't tell where fat sits, but location matters — fat around the abdomen ('apple' shape) is linked to higher health risk than fat on the hips and thighs ('pear' shape). Waist-to-hip ratio captures that distribution, so it complements BMI.

Do the measurement units matter?

No. Because it's a ratio of waist to hip, it comes out the same whether you measure in centimetres or inches — just use the same unit for both.
