Decimal units (KB, MB, GB) are powers of 1,000; binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB) are powers of 1,024. Storage is usually sold in decimal units, while operating systems often report in binary.

Enter a size, choose the unit you have and the unit you want. Decimal units (KB, MB, GB) use powers of 1,000; binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB) use powers of 1,024 — the result shows both.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my hard drive show less space than advertised?

Drives are sold in decimal units (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes), but many operating systems report size in binary units (1 TiB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes). The bytes are the same; the labelling differs, which is why a '1 TB' drive shows as about 0.91 TiB.
