Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin: How the Scales Relate

Three temperature scales, three different zero points. Learn what Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin each measure from, how to convert between them, and why scientists prefer Kelvin.

Temperature seems like it should be simple, but three different scales are in common use, and they don't agree on where "zero" is. Understanding what each one measures from makes converting between them far less mysterious.

Celsius: water as the reference

The Celsius scale (used almost everywhere outside the US) is built around water at ordinary pressure: 0 °C is where water freezes and 100 °C is where it boils. That neat 100-degree span is what makes it intuitive for everyday weather and cooking.

Fahrenheit: a finer everyday scale

Fahrenheit, still standard in the United States, puts water's freezing point at 32 °F and its boiling point at 212 °F — a 180-degree span. The degrees are smaller, so Fahrenheit gives a bit more resolution for describing air temperature without decimals. The conversion to Celsius reflects both the different zero point and the different degree size:

°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. The two scales cross at −40°, where °C and °F read the same.

Kelvin: starting from absolute zero

Kelvin is the scientist's scale. Instead of anchoring to water, it starts at absolute zero — the coldest temperature physically possible, where molecular motion stops. That's 0 K, equal to about −273.15 °C.

K = °C + 273.15. A Kelvin degree is the same size as a Celsius degree, so it's just a shift, no scaling.

Because Kelvin has no negative numbers, it makes the physics clean: doubling the temperature in Kelvin genuinely means twice the thermal energy, which isn't true in Celsius or Fahrenheit. That's why it's the SI unit for temperature.

Frequently asked questions

At what temperature do Celsius and Fahrenheit read the same?
At −40 degrees. −40 °C equals −40 °F exactly — it's the single point where the two scales cross, because their different zero points and degree sizes happen to cancel out there.
Why do scientists use Kelvin instead of Celsius?
Because Kelvin starts at absolute zero and has no negative values, so temperature is directly proportional to thermal energy. That makes physics equations cleaner — doubling the Kelvin temperature really does mean double the energy, which isn't the case with Celsius or Fahrenheit.
